Spacing Leafy Greens

Coffee/Tea Morning To Yall

This morning its an overcast perfect day to start getting these seedlings out. Yesterday I cast out in a L Shape in this box, that I made months ago, my BEET VARIEITES which will take some time to pop up.

If you will notice in the middle of the box there is a recycled tomato cage, that I made earlier in the Spring, I have sowed SUGAR SNAP PEAS around the perimeter of the cage, so the Peas can climb and have their own space and off the soil and easy for me to harvest when we want a snack (I’m going to have to watch hubby because he gets a kick out of eating out of of the garden) stir fry, or salad topping, that’s going to be fun to watch, I also placed some Pea seeds in the middle of the cage, so there are two varieties.

Now notice the string, it is creating a square foot pattern for spacing larger veggies. I didn’t know any better when I first started gardening not to just throw seeds out, and I ended up wasting seed because I do not like THINNING veggies, unless they are veggies that I consider microgreen stage and tasty enough to add in salads or soups.

The main surprise here in this box is the ability to space (12) larger veggies Collards, Cabbage, Broccoli, and Brussel Sprouts and a ton of Beets on 2 sides (L Shape) AND countless Sugar Snap Peas around the tomato cage bottom and inside the cage. That’s a lot of food in a 4x4 space, OH and I failed to mention the box is double sided, so I get to plant TWICE the amount described, and I am thinking of doing Lettuce Varieties on the other side, but its a little warm here, so let’s just duplicate the first 4x4 area.

Ok TEXANS I posted on FB yesterday the Farmer’s Almanac prediction, and YUP it says we may be getting the SAME WINTER, so lets be purposeful and beef up these Fall Gardens and get those Garden Blankets ready or ordered, I am planning on a couple of High Tunnels this Fall. Remember stores could not get deliveries from trucks because of the WINTER ICE STORM AND 8 DEGREE TEMPS, for WEEKS !!!

Here is a beautiful TIP: Leafy greens LOVE FROST especially lettuce, and I recall as a younger adult in my travels, asking my Southern Family to save my COLLARDS after the first frost, they were the sweetest and most tender, and I’ve discovered that lettuce is the same, very resilient, very sweet in the Fall, to me anyway, maybe I am biased because ANYTHING I grow taste BETTER than store bought. I will be growing Collards for my friends and family that had asked earlier, but the rest of the veggies are going in MY freezer lol.

So Lets GROW ABOUT IT NOT JUST TALK ABOUT IT :)

Peace and Blessings
