EBF Indoor Composting Journey to Living SOIL
The Question Iβm asked MOST - WHY DONT YOU COMPOST OUTDOORS? Well I do, however, I mainly compost INDOORS, let me clarify π
Growing year round has evolved for me into several methods of keeping my soil inoculated with LIFE this is sustained by making ZERO WASTE DECISIONS.
Ok THIS may not interest those who compost above ground - I was introduced to the above ground method on EBF (I) and NEVER liked it - I spent that journey being scared by nature BUGS AND ALL THE CRITTERS, and at that time I was a newbie and thought that was the only method. Over time I learned by experimenting that I simply prefer so many other methods that align with my environment and my style - I simply cannot on my land create a smorgasbord for above ground critters and bugs all of whom I RUN FROM π
These are my preferences for EBF (II):
1-Bokashi kitchen composter bins (takes time to ferment in stage 1; does not attract rodents; odor is minimal depending on the amount of Bokashi used; can be pricey to replenish Bokashi)
2-Barrel of rain water - creating liquid fertilizer from adding plant waste (takes time depending on temps; requires stirring and keeping sealed; does not attract rodents; does have strong odor initially) ITS FREE FERTILIZER, except the cost of the barrels of choice; yet still takes even longer to break down, however, the FERTILIZER TEA is available more readily) all dependent on the temps
3-Bury deep in my garden or any future garden plots, any animal carcass and Indoor Bokashi composted food scraps from the kitchen (takes time to compost in Phase 1; depends on temps; bury 2β deep to not attract rodents; ITS ANOTHER FREE COMPOST STARTER, yet still takes even longer to break down to be called COMPLETED COMPOSTED
4-Fish fertilizer (takes time depends on temps will attract rodents if not sealed properly; high odor (itβs FISH π); ANOTHER FREE FERTILIZER because hubby goes fishing often
6-Chicken Coop Soil - ITS AN AFTER PRODUCT OF OWNING CHICKENS, I would not call it free, since I have to feed the littles. Because I give garden scrapes and the littles are great composters and can scratch out and make your soil fluffy - the ROI of meat, eggs, pest control, the cost of buying chicken manure compared to using the scratched soil in the coops, I am able to recoup all cost associated with owning chickens FINALLY !
7-Goat manure enriches the soil with organic matter and nutrients, gradually building fertility and creating a nutrient rich environment for plant roots.
There is an 8th method with the Electric Kitchen Composters, however, a few years ago when I investigated, these composters are only dehydrating the food NOT at all creating REAL COMPOSTED FOOD. I already have a dehydrator, but I donβt use it for this purpose.
NEWLY ADDED - I am proud to have the only electric method (that I am aware of on the market) that Decomposes Food Waste in as Little as 24 Hours or less, depending on what the waste is. REENCLE π, after purchase the results will quickly justify the upfront cost - what I am most excited about is I can save the compost for up to a year !!! but more realistically for me I can overwinter whatβs created and have pure fertilizer for the Spring sowing/transplanting season
So now I am opting to continue using the SCD All Seasons Indoor Composter for the TEA primarily, and now the REENCLE as my indoor composting choices, they both fit side by side on my kitchen counter in an unused space. Iβm excited to enhance my composting journey with our own food waste, and to those that wonder WHY? IYKYK do a little more studying.
Now letβs go grab some coffee and raise our pinky fingers β
